Wine at the heart of the local heritage

Wine is our heritage is a unique opportunity to understand the destiny of a town that is twice a thousand years old. Narbonne has undergone many changes over the centuries, most of them closely linked to wine-growing.

As you travel back in time, you’ll discover its many facets: first daughter of Rome, strategic and economic crossroads of the Empire, prosperous medieval city, epicentre of wine-growing expansion in the 19th century and then of the revolt of the beggars at the beginning of the following century.

In all these periods, wine played a central role, influencing Narbonne’s development and shaping its identity. Today, Narbonne is a leading centre for wine tourism and the art of living in the South of France

Wine is our heritage is an original exploration of Narbonne’s cultural and gastronomic heritage

Narbonne : between ancient remains, medieval history and modernity

We’ll start our exploration at the exceptional Gallo-Roman remains of the Clos de la Lombarde, then wander through the medieval streets of the city to its monumental heart, a place where ancient, medieval and contemporary history meet.
With wine as our common thread, we’ll cross the Pont des Marchands (Merchants‘ Bridge) and walk along the quays of the Canal de la Robine, reviving their great past, from the unloading of Roman amphorae to the winetraders’ checkpoint before the Second World War.

We’ll stop for lunch at a place of your choice, in a friendly, authentic and gourmet southern atmosphere.

Our tour continues with a stroll along the canal, past the pine houses to the Narbo Via museum, where you can discover ancient treasures on the theme of vines and wine.

After admiring the finest collection of painted plasterwork in France, collected at the Clos de la Lombarde, our heritage immersion ends with a guided tasting of three local wines in the museum restaurant.
